Skirting the edge of the vast tephra cone Hverfjall is enchanting Dimmuborgir, a vast, 2,000-year-old field of contorted volcanic pillars, some extending as high as 20 metres (65ft). The helpful visitor centre and café (June–Aug daily 9am–10pm, reduced hours Apr–May, Sept–Dec) offers guided walks in the area. A viewing platform looks out over the expanse, and visitors can wander among haunting arches, caves and natural tunnels – stick to the paths, as the area is very fragile. The most famous formation is Kirkjan (the Church), a cave whose entrance looks like the window of a Gothic cathedral.
